Hartalika Teej is a festival celebrated by Hindu women in North India, especially in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. It is observed on the third day of the dark half of the lunar month Shravan (July-August). On this day, married women pray for the well-being of their husbands while unmarried women pray for a good life partner.
The celebrations of Hartalika Teej begin a day prior to the actual festival. On this day, women get together and sing folk songs in praise of Goddess Parvati. The next day, i.e. the day of Hartalika Teej, women wake up early and take a holy bath. They wear new clothes and apply mehndi (henna) on their hands and feet. Then they offer prayers to Goddess Parvati for a happy married life.
In the evening, women perform the Gauri Puja. A clay statue of Goddess Parvati is made and decorated with flowers, incense sticks and candles. Women offer puja to the goddess and seek her blessings. After the puja, they fast for the whole night.
The fasting is broken only after offering puja to Lord Shiva the next morning
