Shailputri is one of the nine forms of Goddess Durga. She is also known as Brihaspati Shailputri. Shailputri literally means “daughter of the mountains”. As per legend, Shailputri was born to King Daksha and Queen Meneka. She is also considered as the reincarnation of Goddess Sati.
Shailputri is portrayed as a young woman riding a bull. She has four arms and carries a trident and lotus in two of her hands. The other two hands are in abhaya mudra and varada mudra respectively. Shailputri is also known as Parvati or Hemavati.
In her previous birth, she was born to Himavan (king of mountains) and Mena. She went on to marry Lord Shiva after performing severe austerities. Shailputri is also considered as the first incarnation of Goddess Durga.
Worshipping Shailputri on the first day of Navratri is considered highly auspicious. It is believed that those who worship her are blessed with wealth, health and prosperity. Shailputri puja is also performed on the occasion of Vasant Panchami.
